After 1,000 Applications, Director Finds Focus
After 1,000 Applications, Director Finds FocusAfter 1,000 Applications, Director Finds FocusDavid Goldstein considered everything from flower delivery to a cashiers spot and sent out hundreds of applications for full-time work. Then the IT executive got in gear by going to his network.David Goldstein knew he welches doing the wrong thing sending a resume for any job for which he thought he welches remotely qualified after he lost his job as a vice president for information technology at Aetna. I knew it welches wrong, he said. All the advice says to be selective about who you send resumes to. But it kept me busy. Each time I sent a resume, I was refreshing my mind about my skill set. I was remembering things that didnt necessarily come to me the first time around. And it reminded me of something I could add to my resume, the TechnologyLadder member said.Goldstein had been working for Aetna near his home in Sanford, Fla., when he was laid off along with 1,000 colleagues in December 200 8.Florida, which has been especially hard hit during this recession, was a tough job market to crack. So Goldstein said he was trying several strategies to get the attention of hiring managers.First, he reworked his resume with the help of the outplacement service provided by his employer. Then, he perfected his cover-letter technique, he said, to the point that he was able to give tips to his resume-writing class at the outplacement center. To get the hiring managers attention, I would start off my letter by saying, Here are three reasons why I would be a perfect fit for this job. And underneath that, Id create two columns, with the job requirements in one column and my qualifications across from them in another column. The teacher in the class said, I have to write this down. Despite his success in class, it was a little tougher out in the job-search world. This economy and this job search were the most difficult Ive seen in 15 years, he said. I sent out over 1,000 resumes over se ven months, and I ended up with just 20 phone interviews and three onsite interviews.A stuttered paceHis search ultimately took seven months, and Goldstein said it could be hard to keep his head in the game. There might be two weeks of heavy-duty activity, and than a week or two of nothing. There were a lot of highs and lows. But he did find ways to keep himself going. On a couple of holidays, I delivered flowers for a local florist, said the father of three. And I did apply for a cashiers job at Lowes, but I was turned down because I was overqualified. I was at the point where I would do whatever I needed to provide an income.Goldstein also got satisfaction working on behalf of some of his former Aetna team members who had also been laid off. When I made calls to my network, and people said, I dont have a job at your level, but I do need someone to do this, I was able to refer my team members, he said. I felt good I was able to do that.Documenting each new contact pays offWhile Gold stein did send a lot of resumes, he spent a fair amount of time targeting certain companies and contacts that he thought would be the most promising. He learned from his seven-month job search that even if you dont get the job, youve made a contact. And that contact is almost as good as a job interview.Goldstein was keeping a notebook with every contact he made. In an interview in February, he learned while speaking with the hiring manager that they had both worked at the same company 10 years before and had overlapped for about a month or so. While he didnt get offered that position (even after the company flew him to Washington, D.C., for the interview), Goldstein knew this was a connection he should not let go of.One lesson I have learned is to never burn a bridge, Goldstein said. The job I was finally hired for involved meeting someone who I had crossed paths with at a job 10 years previously. I dont know if thats why I got the interview, but I have to think it helped. He connect ed with the hiring manager on LinkedIn and continued searching for positions with that company, a health care organization. When in early April he found another position for which he felt he was qualified, he contacted the hiring manager, who was happy to pass his resume along to the part in charge of hiring for that job.Goldstein had a phone interview, then flew to Chicago for another interview. A week later, he had a follow-up interview. He was hired as project director for the health care organization in Chicago in mid-July, and begins his new job on August 24.While he had hoped he would not have to uproot his family, he is excited about the opportunity in this new position. Its an excellent opportunity for me, and I actually worked at one of the affiliated companies of the organization in Florida for seven years, so I will walk into this company immediately vested in the 401(k) and Ill get an extra week of vacation, Goldstein said. That was one of the reasons I was targeting this company. As he spoke about his job search, his wife was in Chicago looking for a house to rent for his family. His kids, ages 11, eight and six, have never before seen snow. My wife was born and raised in Florida. The kids are excited. It will be a big adventure for everyone.

3 ways to take informational interviews to the next level
3 ways to take informational interviews to the next level3 ways to take informational interviews to the next levelYou wrote the perfect informational interview request and received a YES Congrats. Now, its time to prepare for the conversation. When you first started doing informational interviews, you focused on asking good questions and treating it like a job interview, without an actual job on the table. Having done your research and established a learning outcome in mind, you were successful and started building confidence in this process.Whether youre still working through jitters or are an informational interview veteran, here are three clear ways to take your upcoming conversation to the next levelStop interviewing + start connectingYoure bedrngnis sending very many cold asks anymore. (If youre like, whats that? Weve got you - read this first) Youre likely meeting fruchtwein people through work or introductions via your network. Youve got your pitch down and youre about expandin g your world opportunities, growth, reach. When youre sitting in front of a person youre psyched to connect with, you want to have a true conversation. You dont want a chat that wanders aimlessly and limps to a close where neither of you feel like you got much out of it, or where you blandly ask a litany of questions. An executive leadership coach once gave me a winning format for structuring these conversations. She recommended the following conversation openerThanks for taking the time to meet with meI know your time is valuableId like to focus on what Ive been up toId also like to focus on what I hope is nextI hope you can helpThats it. Its straightforward but sophisticated. This isnt a time to talk about your last vacation or great podcast youve found. This is elevator pitch time. Youre explaining who you are, what you do, and where you want to go next. But yall - this works.Youre probably scratching your head thinking Diane, what about my questions? If your pitch is polished, you ll get everything you need. Or maybe youre thinking Shouldnt I let the other person lead the conversation? My answer is no - your interviewee is busy enough. You want her to make time to meet with you, drive the conversation, and then help you? No way. Theyre sacrificing their time - its up to you to make that time worth it.Ive used this three-part agenda over 60 times, with Fortune 500 executives, non-profit leaders, entrepreneurs, and across different industries from retail to techyou get the picture- it works.Act like youve been there beforeAs you progress in your careers, your network will (hopefully) elevate with it. If youre like me, sometimes it takes all your effort to not fangirl when you get to meet someone incredible. Vince Lombardi once gave sage advice to an overzealous player on his football team the next time you get to the end zone, act like youve been there before. What does this mean in a professional setting? Oftentimes, nerves and over-excitement become a stum bling block. And thats natural - youre only human, after all. But youve got to keep your head on straight - dont let the informational part fool you - this is a real interview.Youre really talking to someone who has the potential to influence your career. More importantly, you have the opportunity to build an authentic relationship with limitless possibilities. The best way to get past the nerves is through practice.Do you have your story nailed down? Is your pitch tight? If someone told you they had your dream job, would you be able to explain why youre the best candidate?Regardless, your goal here is three-foldRepresent yourself and your story well so you start a relationshipLearn something newCome away with a next step that moves your career and goals forwardDiscover what you have that they needI recently heard former Bloomberg reporter and current NYSE Executive Vice Chairman Betty Liu recount how she got an elusive interview with business billionaire Warren Buffett. For year s, she wasnt making much headway with her requests. She decided to change the way she thought about it by instead thinking, what could she do for him? Realizing her unique access to news, she began sending articles and insights about Buffetts companies. Before long, Bettys next interview request was accepted. SuccessSo as you prepare for your informational, ask yourself - whats your unique value proposition? Are you in school or a recent graduate? Maybe the person youre interviewing has a child/co-worker/friend who could use advice and insights. Do you have access to audiences this person needs? At work or in a volunteer organization, can you influence speaking opportunities? Perhaps the person youre interviewing is looking to expand their reach? What about your manager or organizations leadership? Could you create connections down the road?If youre really stumped remember, you inherently have the ability to be a sounding board and a true connection. So, keep in stich and jump in w hen the opportunity presents itself. With these three tips in your back pocket and the fact that someone has already said yes to an informational interview, youre ready to go next level. New Era of Performance Review Tips
New Era of Performance Review TipsNew Era of Performance Review TipsMost people dread job wertzuwachs reviews (cue ominous music), whether theyre on the giving or receiving end. But youre leid doing yourself any favors by calling in sick to avoid them. Companies have figured out its worthwhile to devote time and attention to employee evaluations, leading to new wertzuwachs review tips for managers and their teams. An OfficeTeam survey shows performance reviews are undergoing changes, with some companies shortening the process, increasing the frequency of feedback, incorporating rating scales, adding peer assessment and having separate compensation discussions. And the result? Respondents said these appraisals are effective in improving employee performance (86 percent), leading to a variety of benefits, such as staff motivation, identification of needed changes and decisions about merit increases and bonuses. If youre an employer or manager looking for performance review tips to help wi th career progression or company success, scroll down to the next section. If youre an employee, read on.Performance review tips for employeesThese meetings can affect everything from your career path to your chances for that raise youve been asking for, so its not surprising if they make you nervous. But performance appraisals actually can be helpful. The key lies in making the meeting work in your favor. How exactly do you do that? There are several ways, some of which require preparation. Others involve adjusting the way you receive constructive criticism. For employees, setting a goal to make a good impression at work (followed by a positive review) starts with small, everyday efforts to improve their performance. Here are seven tips to help you prepare for- and rock - your performance review1. Show your adaptability. One way to demonstrate this attribute is to become mora proficient in the latest software or to attend seminars, webinars and courses. Explain how youve shown init iative to build your job skills.2. Be innovative. This could be anticipating an upcoming task and tackling it beforehand, untersttzung or providing assistance to a colleague, or doing something for the greater team, like volunteering to lead a project not yet assigned to someone. Have you had an idea that was successfully implemented, or did you find a way the departments budget could be used more effectively? Bring it up.3. Speak positively. Talking energetically about the company and the people you work with contributes to a positive workplace.4. Listen. Remember, the goal of feedback is not to make you feel bad. Rather, its intended to help bring out the best of your abilities. So actively listen to what your manager is saying and consider how you can apply the words to your responsibilities.5. Dig deeper. If you have questions about the reviewers feedback, dont hesitate to ask them. After all, you cant improve unless you completely understand what areas need improvement and exac tly why youre not meeting expectations. Also, many managers will see your active interest as a positive sign indicating that youre planning to act on their feedback.6. Drop the defensiveness. Nothing good comes of performance reviews if you go on the defensive, trying to offer explanations or excuses. If you do need to explain a mistake or misunderstanding, thats fine, but make sure you have supporting evidence. Otherwise, you could sound like you are playing a game of he-said-she-said.7. Be engaged. Performance reviews are a conversation between you and your manager, which is why you need talking points. Winging it is rarely effective and could waste the allotted time you have each period for this one-on-one. Here are some things to inquire about and discuss during the reviewWhat could you be doing differently? What new skills and knowledge do you need to become more of an asset? What goals does your employer have for you?How can you be more helpful to your team? What company challeng es does your manager predict over the next year? Performance review tips for employersThe more you put into this task, the more you and your team will get out of it. This is your chance to provide strategic vision, establish goals, clarify objectives, set up expectations and help your employees improve. The performance review also creates space for discussion, allowing you to find out more about the needs and goals of those you supervise. Many companies have streamlined how feedback is given and encourage supervisors to check in with staff more often, said Stephanie Naznitsky, executive director of OfficeTeam. This allows organizations to be nimble in addressing issues, evaluating progress and recognizing good work. Here are a few performance review tips that take advantage of the new workplace trends of less-structured and career-focused check-ins to help set you up for success.1. Dont wait to offer feedba ck. If an issue with performance exists, address it right away.2. Establish clear expectations. Make sure your team members understand their individual responsibilities and how they contribute to achieving the firms goals, just as management does. Explain the criteria that you will use for performance evaluations so your workers know what you expect.3. Be prepared, not scripted. Read through your notes from previous assessments. What issues were raised during those meetings? What objectives did you set? Have those goals been met? Collect comments from other managers the employee works with. Its important to bring relevant examples and talking points to your job discussion, but the more free-flowing it is, the better. Try for a give-and-take conversation rather than a one-sided one.4. Uncover key motivators. Knowing what your needs are for this position, in addition to the employees expectations and career goals, is a vital step to creating common goals, providing useful feedback and measuring progress at work. Ask questions such as theseWhats been your greatest work accomplishment here, and what do you hope to accomplish over the coming year?Do you have everything you need to perform your job?Where do you feel you need to improve in your role? Are you comfortable with our organizational culture, and are there areas you think that need change?START HIRING NOW5. Stay focused on the big picture. Whether youre praising an employee for entering orders with efficiency or critiquing the way an interaction was handled with a customer, be sure to explain the effect the performance had on departmental (or company) priorities. When people understand the effect of the quality of their work, theyre more likely to feel valued, and as a result, motivated to improve.6. Strike a balance between positive and critical. Although its best to avoid negativity, its important not to sugarcoat issues. If theres a herausforderung with performance, be direct and specific. And remember So metimes even the best workers need to receive critical feedback. On the flip side, even those employees with the most room for improvement should be praised for their strengths.7. Offer potential solutions for performance issues. For every piece of constructive criticism you give, be prepared with a solution. For example, if an employee is having trouble mastering the appointment-scheduling software, suggest specific training that might help. Or if communication skills are the issue, consider facilitating a mentoring relationship with a coworker who excels at customer service or team building.8. Follow up frequently. Ideally, you should conduct performance reviews more than once per year. If possible, schedule a time to revisit the issues you discussed with the employee a few months after the review so you can check in on their progress. At these meetings, be flexible if a training program isnt helping the employee meet goals, suggest a different approach.Employees can find perform ance appraisals intimidating. After all, their work is under scrutiny. Thats why these meetings should be a conversation, not a monologue. If you establish a collaborative environment, you show your staff that youre invested in them, and theyll feel more appreciated and more motivated to perform even better in the coming year. The world of work is changing - as it always has and will continue to do - and direct, open and honest feedback are the watchwords you want to make sure are part of your workplace.

Seven Easy Resolutions to Improve your Recruitment Strategies
Seven Easy Resolutions to Improve your Recruitment StrategiesSeven Easy Resolutions to Improve your Recruitment StrategiesSeven Easy Resolutions to Improve your Recruitment Strategies PicoultAs you develop your recruitment strategies for the year ahead, consider this idea give applicants a pleasant surprise. How can something so simple be effective, you ask? When you deliver the unexpected in the hiring process, it makes a powerful impression on job applicants. It creates positive memories that set your company apart from competing employers, helping you attract top talent.Of course, youve got to nail some fundamentals in order for this recruitment strategy to work. Even the most delightful surprises cant make up for basic shortcomings in the career opportunity youre offering for example, a very uncompetitive salary and benefits package or an unsafe work environment. However, if youve got those table stakes covered, then pleasant surprises can give you the edge you need to win the war for talent. In the context of geschftliches miteinander interactions, just what is a pleasant surprise? Its something that you do, say, or deliver that is unexpected, positive and memorable relative to competitors. Often times, it can be a small gesture, but one that speaks volumes about your business values.Start with Solid Recruiting PracticesAsk job seekers what constitutes a pleasant surprise and theyll probably cite things like an employment application thats easy to complete, a job description thats clear and informative, or a recruiter who returns phone calls. Those might seem like basics, rather than pleasant surprises. Yet so many businesses disregard the quality of their applicant experience when candidates come across a company that consistently delivers on these fundamentals, they take notice.Ive addressed this concept in previous recruiting articles and videos. However, without diminishing the importance of those fundamentals, todays focus is on a powerful complement to traditional recruiting strategies.Impress Applicants with Pleasant SurprisesThat complement is about not just nailing the basics, but delivering something mora. So in 2012, when youre trying to recruit great hires, consider surprising your job applicants by applying these ideasMake eye contact and smile from 10 feet away. In our smartphone-addicted culture, its rare that people make eye contact with one another, let alone do it from a distance. When a job applicant walks into your store or approaches a reception desk, and is greeted by a heads up, smiling face, its unusual and striking. It sends a refreshing message that applicants dont often receiveyoure important to me and you have my attention.Offer VIP greetings. Many employers may not realize it, but they frequently treat job applicants with discourtesy (e.g., unreturned phone calls). Turn that to your advantage by treating applicants (especially your finalists) like VIPs. When calling them to schedule a final interview, turn t he conversation into more than a robotic calendaring exercise. Mention how excited everyone is to meet them, and how glad you are that theyll be paying you a visit. Apply the same approach when the applicant arrives onsite. Dont treat them like a number or shuffle them around like a piece of paper focus on making them feel welcome.Anticipate needs.Part of making the applicant feel welcome is anticipating their personal needs. Depending on how long their trip was to your location, they may appreciate a bottle of water or directions to a restroom. If you have a receptionist greeting visitors, have them offer these things to the applicant upon arrival (or, if not, offer them yourself). Even if the candidate declines, theyll appreciate the offer and view it as a signal that you actually care about the wellbeing of others.Provide directions on exit.If applicants are local, you likely have their address. If theyre traveling from afar, you probably know if they flew in or took a train. Wh en their onsite session ends, hand them written directions for getting back to the airport, train station, or just driving home. If theyre leaving around a meal time, highlight some local restaurants on the map. All this takes is a simple Google Maps query, but applicants will be amazed by your considerate effort to make their travels a little easier.Give a swag bag. As you whittle down your list of applicants, consider giving them a basket of promotional items from your company (a mug, t-shirt, or small gift card). This gesture would be reserved just for the final few candidates, so it wouldnt cost much, but is guaranteed to make a memorable impression. After all, how often is it that job applicants go to an interview and leave with a gift?Offer a shadow session.Applicants may be thrilled with everything they hear about your business and the role, but they may be left wondering whats it really like working there? If you have confidence in the quality of your work environment, consid er offering the most promising applicants a shadow session with an existing employee whos already doing the job.Even if its just for one hour, it gives applicants an unvarnished look at the role theyve applied for, and an opportunity to pepper a future potential colleague with questions. Its a pleasant surprise for the applicant because it reflects uncommon transparency, and a genuine effort by the employer to ensure a good mutual fit.Demystify the compensation package.Eventually, youll make a job offer to an applicant. But the games not over there, because the individual might mucksmuschenstill be considering competing offers the opportunity remains to influence them with a pleasant surprise. After making a verbal offer, follow-up with a polished information packet that clearly and simply describes all the elements of the package such as compensation information, benefits, training programs, and other unique offerings (e.g, employee discounts). Many businesses view this as an admini strative communication with a prospective employee. View it instead as a final sales pitch, a platform for making the applicants decision easy and straightforward.Incorporating pleasant surprises into your recruitment strategy particularly those that make the candidate feel good or special in some way create positive, memorable impressions. As such, they can be very powerful sources of differentiation, in any type of business interaction.Presuming youve got the recruiting basics nailed, its the pleasant surprises that applicants will remember when they return home and evaluate their employment options.Author BioJon Picoult is Founder of Watermark Consulting, a firm that helps businesses impress their customers, candidates and employees. 6 Things to Never Say to a Recruiter
6 Things to Never Say to a Recruiter6 Things to Never Say to a Recruiter How many times have you heard that popular refrain? Too many to count. However, when it comes to the job search process, many job seekers think that this advice only applies during the scheduled phone calls, interviews and interactions with the hiring manager and your potential team. After all, isnt the recruiter just the go-between, the person who arranges interviews and leases between candidate and boss? Wrong. The recruiter is a stakeholder and is an integral part of the hiring process. To overlook or underestimate his or her influence is a big mistake.Every interaction with a potential employer should leid only be professional but it should dictate that you are purposeful and thoughtful about everything you say. Whether its just a quick text through Canvas or a phone call to discuss salary expectation, choose your words wisely to ensure your own success. Here are six phrases to never say to a recruiter if you want a competitive job offer.Much like dating, the smell of desperation in the job search can be palpable. Whether the bills are piling up, your current gig is an absolute dead end, or whether this is your dream company, avoid telling a recruiter that youll take anything for a few key reasonsNever settle for the opening salary offer. Never. A salary negotiation is a collaboration, and a key ingredient of a successful collaboration is good communication, says Josh Doody, author of Fearless Salary Negotiation . Youll often get a job offer that seems really appealing, and it might be far more than you expected. Your instinct in that case might be to just accept the offer because its so good. However, you should be prepared to negotiate your salary and know how much you could earn given your skills, education and location by using Glassdoors Know Your Worth personal salary calculator.Instead of blindly accepting their offer, do your research. Then, Doody says, formu late a counter offer to see how much you can improve it. The negotiation should end with the company saying Yes to you. Once they say Yes to you, or you run out of things to ask for, then you are finished negotiating.Complaining about your last company is a big no-no. Barring some really unique circumstance, griping about your former boss, colleagues or work environment can be detrimental to your interview process as well as your professional reputation.Instead of making such a blunt statement, critically evaluate how you have navigated challenges on the job. Share with the recruiter how you have coped and actually thrived in spite of less than ideal circumstances. Just remember, trash talking is a no no.While there may be truth to this statement, save it for your friends over drinks. Do not share this with a recruiter. When asked for a list of recommendations, rarely will a recruiter counter your list with a comment like, Why didnt you include your last boss? References and recomme ndations should come from people who can speak to your accomplishments, successes and positive work experiences. Glowing recommendations are a big part of putting your best foot forward. However, recruiters arent likely to care about the less than savory relationship you had with your former boss. Nix the gossip. Offer up the best recommendations you can and if you are questioned about the absence of your most recent boss in that bunch, simply reply, The group of people I provided are best suited to speak to my accomplishments, work ethic and abilities. I think theyll provide you with a 360-degree view of why Id be an excellent fit for this role.Unless there has been a death in the family or a critical emergency, canceling an interview on the day of is tantamount to saying I dont really want this job and I dont respect you or your time.If you need to adjust the time or youre running late, be transparent. Being late to an interview with no explanation or without emailing or calling ah ead to say they are running late. This one will knock out 99% of interviewees, says Jamie Hichens. Senior Manager of Talent Acquisition at Glassdoor. At the very least, if youre running late, call and offer an ETA, an explanation, or an offer to reschedule. And remember to apologize for the inconvenience.Depending on the size of the company, job applications can receive hundreds or thousands of resumes per position. And while recruiters try to respond to everyone, sometimes its harder than jobseekers may think. Thats no reason to be curt with a recruiter or make a passive aggressive comment like this. Use your time with a recruiter wisely by focusing on the role, the company and your unique fit for both. Dont waste time or diminish your chances of a positive interview experience by making snarky comments. There are a few ways you can avoid the black hole. With the increased use of online applicant tracking systems even among smaller companies, it means the recruiter or hiring manager may not see your resume unless you use just the right keywords, says Mikaela Kiner, Founder/CEO of UniquelyHR. Referrals also increase the likelihood that a recruiter will see your resume. If you dont have a personal connection, use social media to find out who does. Dont be embarrassed to ask someone to make an introduction on your behalf, people do this all the time. If youre uncomfortable asking for favors include an easy way for them to say no, like If youre not comfortable connecting me, I completely understand.

How To Thrive, Not Just Survive, In Your Retail Job
How To Thrive, Not Just Survive, In Your Retail JobHow To Thrive, Not Just Survive, In Your Retail JobTis the season the retail season. With the upcoming Black Friday craze, the holiday shopping season begins. This is a great opportunity for available jobs with retail hiringincreasing from 12% of U.S. jobs to 20%.After years of working retail as a teenager in various departments at Nordstrom, where I catered to customers ranging from teeny bopper shoppers to older ladies and even picky men purchasing suits, Ive picked up a couple key tenets to help survive a retail role during the holiday craze. The influx of shoppers can feel overwhelming for any retail worker, but the experience gained from a retail job can provide many benefits.Whether you are seeking a long-term career in retail or are just using it as an in-between step in your career, you can thrive in your retail position and gain skills valuable in any workplace and even help guide your future career path.Keep the following tips in mind to make the most of your retail roleWear comfortable shoesWhile certain stores may provide footwear guidelines and tennis shoes may be banned, it is worth investing in a comfortable pair of shoes. You will be standing on your feet for hours and walking around the store helping customers during this busy shopping time. It is to your benefit and theirs, in a service position, that you feel as comfortable and happy as possible to best assist customers. Happiness begins with your feet as enduring painful blisters is not ideal.5,4,3,2,1 Take deep breathsDuring the holidays, stress is running high and you will certainly interact with at least a few unhappy or irate customers. As egregious as their requests may be, take a deep breath and avoid becoming frazzled or losing your temper. The ability to handle daily mini crises can only make you stronger and cultivate your leadership abilities, critical thinking skills, and ability to work independently. If you are feeling overwhel med or angry from a customer interaction, take a deep breath and smile.Dont go crazy with your employee discountSome stores offer their employees a discount. Having worked at a place like Nordstrom, I can attest to the allure of 20% off the entire store. The shoes and the possibilities for purchase are endless. But, remember that you are working in order to make money. Although the discount can be tempting, if you can, choose direct deposit so your money goes straight into the bank. This will remove temptation and help you save up for a purchase you would really like to invest in.Use your co-workers as an assetCertain retailers use a commission incentive system for employees, which can pit co-workers against one another. But, the yep co-worker should not become synonymous with competition. Alternatively, your co-workers should be an asset and your greatest allies during the holiday craze. The ability to work with a variety of different personalities is an important skill. If you wor k together in a retail environment, that can mean more money in everyones pockets and a more pleasant time. It is to your advantage to have a co-worker who can help you out during an interaction with a difficult customer.Use your position as a building blockMany of the skills you develop in a retail environment are transferable to any workplace. By working in the customer service industry, you can develop strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills, which are coveted in a candidate by almost any employer. Youll develop the ability to relate to almost anyone, including customers and co-workers. Also, do not undervalue the thick skin required for a retail environment and your ability to stay calm, dicke bretter bohren mssen solve in stressful scenarios, and work under pressure. In fact, your strong suits in retail can indicate a career path for you. Look at the skills below and see if any of the future career paths sound appealing.More frequently, retail workers are required t o use diverse technology. If you relish the chance to develop your tech savvy skills and enjoy the hands-on point-of-sale software, you may enjoy a career in IT.Do you know your product information forwards, backwards, and sideways? Do you enjoy selling? You might look for an inside sales position. Does helping brighten a customers day brighten your day too? You might want to look for positions as a customer service or happiness associate or specialist.Does selling the product through other channels or delving into what compels a customer to buy the product pique your interest? You might look into careers in marketing.Do you enjoy calculating the cash register math in your head when dispensing change? You might consider a position in accounting.Retail season might seem like an eternity now, but it wont last forever. If you need a new role for after youve survived the retail rush, check out Simply Hired to set you on your path to success.
