8 Ways to Crush the Career Blues in 2019

8 Ways to Crush the Career Blues in 2019 As we enter the cold, dark and dreary winter months, finding the enthusiasm to power through work after all the festivities can make the rest of year seem particularly gloomy. In fact, NHS estimates that  one in 15 Britons  experience seasonal affective disorder (SAD) between September and April â€" a type of depression that is caused by a lack of exposure to sunlight during the darker winter months, although cold temperatures and weak daylight also  contribute to  this melancholic state. A survey by Bidvine last year found the top priorities for workers in 2018 included travel and getting a promotion or pay rise, followed by the resolution to improve mental health. In 2019 a YouGov survey revealed much of the same, with people looking to eat better, exercise more, care for themselves better, learn new skills and get a new job. With more employees looking to climb the career ladder in 2019, manage work-life balance and increase happiness, here are eight simple ways on how to crush the career blues with some positive changes, according to Instant Offices: 1. Ask for an Increase A TotalJobs poll of 5,000 people in the UK showed  68%  hadn’t received a pay rise or promotion in the last year, leading to unhappiness at work. If you’re committed to your job but need more to keep you motivated, it’s definitely time to stop stalling and ask for a raise. Don’t turn the conversation into an ultimatum â€" if you’re happy with your career but not the pay, make sure to communicate that clearly. 2. Find a Mentor Take charge of your career track this year by finding a mentor willing to share their insights and experience. In addition to guiding you on career growth and decision making, their constructive feedback can help you expand your skill set.  Fortune 500  companies understand the value of mentorship â€" 71% offer formal mentoring programs to their employees. 3. Get Involved in Teamwork Volunteer to take on a challenging client project or pitch internal projects with coworkers. Collaboration and teamwork can increase creativity, help strengthen relationships, create a more positive work environment and boost confidence. Some studies also suggest team partnerships can increase productivity at work. 4. Stay Busy Around  40%  of UK employees admit to being bored at work, and more than half think their existing skills are being wasted, according to a study by OC Tanner. Boredom at work is a significant source of stress and can lead to depression and disinterest. Ensure you take regular breaks during long tasks, but during quiet periods, keep yourself busy by learning a new skill or pursuing personal goals that can assist with your career. 5. Upskill Yourself Increase your value at work by learning a new skill. Research by World Economic Forum shows that over a third (35%) of skills that are considered important today will change in five years. 6. Use Vacation Days Perhaps you want to save time off for a long holiday later in the year, or simply feel you don’t have enough time for a break, but taking regular holidays throughout the year will help you feel refreshed, relaxed and more productive. 7. Prioritize Mental Health CIPD found 23% of British workers  feel their organization doesn’t take employee wellbeing seriously, yet more than a third of the UK workforce experience anxiety, depression, or stress. With this in mind, it is imperative to recognize the signs that your mental health may be under pressure and to ensure you de-stress regularly. 8. Step Out of the Office No more lunch at your desk in 2019. It’s not natural to stay seated for so long, and research shows Brits spend around nine hours a day sitting down at work â€" a sedentary lifestyle that takes its toll on our health. Reducing the amount of time you stay seated can do wonders for your productivity, as well as physical and mental health. Take charge of your happiness and be proactive by contributing to a work environment that sees you excel rather than be demotivated in 2019. Resume Writing Companies in NYC

Resume Writing Companies in NYCIf you are a newly graduated high school student, or a student that has just finished a few semesters and is now planning to enroll yourself at a local college or university, you will definitely want to use resume writing companies in NYC for help. The reason is very simple: the people at these companies understand exactly what it takes to get into a good college or university, and how important it is to get your application through the admissions committee.Applying to colleges and universities is not like applying to a nightclub. You have to do a lot of research, fill out a ton of applications, and listen to a lot of applications all from the same person. To avoid this problem, a lot of high schools today are requiring applicants to apply as part of their high school prom. This does not mean that you need to apply to every high school in the area though, which is why so many high schools are now requiring an application with specific instructions to be filled out by students on the application of the admissions committee. When filling out the form, you will need to put down a lot of information about yourself. While at most of the time, the admission committees are pretty easy to deal with, there are times when things are not going as smoothly as they should be.As the representative of the school, you are tasked with guiding the student through the process of applying to various schools, and if you screw up at any point during the application process, you might get booted out. Getting your application through the school's admissions committee is a major step in your career, so make sure that you don't mess up at any point. That means if you find a typo in a section of the form, you need to fix it before your student submission date rolls around. The best way to get the most out of resume writing companies in NYC is to keep a fairly formal resume on hand. Insteadof using the resume to paint a picture of you, instead use it to craft your future employer. By making it as professional looking as possible, you will get your point across with an ease that will likely impress your potential employer. The best type of resume is one that isn't too dry and doesn't emphasize your academic achievements too much. By presenting yourself as an enthusiastic person that has a vast amount of interests, you will get more consideration from potential employers that are just looking for someone to help them grow their business. Remember, this is a public service job, and it is in the best interest of every company to hire the most qualified person to take on such a position.Last but not least, when applying to high school, take the time to understand the responsibilities that come with the job. Not all students can be expected to volunteer in the social clubs, or join athletic teams, or even attend their graduation ceremony. This is why your resume needs to be something that shows that you took the right initiative to try to make a difference in the world. With the help of resume writing companies in NYC, you can now create a resume that will impress your potential employer and stand out in the crowd. Make sure that you know what it takes to get your resume through the process, and find yourself a professional to help you out.

Solve for Why The Business Secret - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Solve for Why … The Business Secret - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career How often do you ask why? Is there a maximum number of times to ask why? Why … do you say that or think that? The  5 Whys Asking why five times is a commonly used tool (and expression) to get to the root of an issue. In the system developed in Japan by Sakichi Toyoda of Toyota Motor Company fame  this is a commonly used tool and technique to dive into issues and seek both the problems and the solutions. In the methodology (as shown below in an excerpt) there is a simple elegance to asking why in an attempt to get to the root cause of an issue. If needed The 5 Why’s can be repeated. The vehicle will not start. (the problem) Why? The battery is dead. (first why) Why? The alternator is not functioning. (second why) Why? The alternator belt has broken. (third why) Why? The alternator belt was well beyond its useful service life and not replaced. (fourth why) Why? The vehicle was not maintained according to the recommended service schedule. (fifth why, a root cause) It does work. However, there can be drawbacks if used too often or too egregiously. I have found that asking why 5 times does one of two things: 1. You get to the root of the issue. 2. You get punched in the face. Of course, we have all seen and heard kids ask why over and over again. You could say they are onto something … and they are. However, in business and in your adult life you should use your “Why’s” sparingly or perhaps silently. By asking yourself why (silently) you can dig for the root of an issue. I think this is how Columbo solved a lot of crimes on the TV show, then he saved the obvious questions and conclusions (root causes) for the TV camera when he’d say “just one more thing” When used wisely, the use of the word why … or what I call “Solving for Why” can help you stand out in your career. By using why judiciously and, as mentioned above silently, you can dig into the root issues impacting challenges at work, in life and even in relationships. Then, when you are ready … ask the questions out loud and you’ll be ready to tackle bigger problems. Solving for Why is a powerful tool. Use it wisely, use it often and pretty soon people will be asking you to think about their biggest challenges and asking you to help seek out the problems and the solutions that are vexing them. The only question left is … Why haven’t you started yet?

How to Write a Better Technical Resume

How to Write a Better Technical ResumeWriting a better technical resume is important for those who have been laid off or for those who are trying to enter the job market after a layoff. By now we've all heard of companies eliminating job openings due to downsizing, and companies reorganizing their workforces. The end result can be that there's a job opening, but it's not for you.You may be offered a position with the company, or you may be told that you're being moved up in rank to a new level within the company. You may find yourself working for a different department altogether. There are many options that you can choose from if you find yourself out of a job.In order to write a better technical resume, you will need to realize that in order to get a job you must have all of the qualifications necessary to fill the position. Not all of them may be transferable to other positions within the company. This is where your technical knowledge of the industry comes into play. Some of the q ualifications needed for a technical resume include references to your prior employment. These may come from former employers, or other sources that you feel comfortable providing them to. These could be from company job descriptions, or from outside sources.Another qualification needed for writing a better technical resume is past employers. You can find information on this by searching through the company's website. When you obtain this information, try to contact the employees of that company that worked for you, and talk to them about how you may be able to further your career in their field.Other references to your previous job are also highly recommended. This is where a cover letter comes in. A cover letter should be given to these people, but it's important to make sure that they are properly addressed as well.Your resume is your first chance to sell yourself to a potential employer, and should be used as a good place to start. It should provide a list of all of the qualific ations that you have, and it should be a clear and concise way to give them your best selling points. Making an effort to include all of the relevant information about you will help to ensure that you are able to get the position that you want.Remember that writing a better technical resume doesn't mean that you are trying to sell yourself. It is a way to help you gain employment that will allow you to take care of the same issues that led to the layoff. Make sure that you list all of the information that you have available to you and make sure that your information is a positive addition to the interview.

5 Important Things to Know For a Modern Job Search - CareerEnlightenment.com

4. Your online brand can make or break your chanceEmployers  are  using  social  media  to  screen  job  candidates. They’re looking for consistency across networks to determine if you’re the right fit for their opening so, if your personal social media accounts are unprofessional, it’s likely they’ll take that into account when making a decision. Alternatively, if you have a strong online brand and good search results, it can work in your favor during the hiring process.5. Recommendations can help you land a new jobAn employer searching for you online is looking for red flags. What’s the risk of hiring you over the other candidate? Will you stay at the job if they offer it to you?If you have recommendations on your LinkedIn profile, it can put a hiring manager’s mind at ease and give them insight into you as an employee they might not get from your resume or cover letter alone. Plus, they’re words from people you’ve worked with before, which holds even more weight.W hat else do job seekers need to know about today’s job search? If you’re back on the job search after 10 (or more) years, what did you notice was different?
